about

Many times in our lives we'll find ourselves in situations in which we're powerless, or we have to accept the ebb and flow of life. Emma Schoetz' poem captures this feeling of the power of time and its effect on our lives. The poem takes the form of a palindrome, which allows the reader to find different meanings in the phrases both forwards and backwards. Although the music isn't strictly palindromic, it uses the renaissance-like vocal parts to express the momentum and emotion of the marble's journey, and the percussion to emphasize the elegant but eerie atmosphere of the majesty of time.

The Marble
by Emma Schoetz

The marble commences its track with or without you.
Once one gets the ball rolling, as they feel the smooth chill of matter on matter...
They're consumed by the sensation of commencing on the path already drawn out for them.
Unable to dismantle the synthetic shell that is now your prison.
There is no more choice. No more sound. No more man.
Just the automatic heartbeat of something beyond description. Beyond beyond.
And you. Rolling towards an ending. Flightless birds attempting to spread their sermons.
Immobile, and yet secretly as profound as the track you never took.
And you. Rolling towards an ending. Flightless birds attempting to spread their sermons.
Just the automatic heartbeat of something beyond description. Beyond beyond.
There is no more choice. No more sound. No more man.
Unable to dismantle the synthetic shell that is now your prison.
They're consumed by the sensation of commencing on the path already drawn out for them.
Once one gets the ball rolling, as they feel the smooth chill of matter on matter...
The marble commences its track with or without you.
